A new review claims that supplements, like vitamins and minerals, do not protect against cardiovascular disease.

Supplements are taken to ensure that your body is getting the right amount of vitamins and minerals. This review said that although vitamin supplements will not prevent cardiovascular disease, folic acid may prevent stroke.

The official message that government authorities and nonprofit organizations have been putting forth to the public is that, even though supplements may help, food should always come first.

Food is meant to fuel the body.  To ensure that your body is getting the right amount of vitamins and minerals, go for foods like fruits, veggies, lean proteins, and whole grains.

In 2014, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force issued a statement that reported, "Currently, there is not enough evidence to determine whether taking a multivitamin will help prevent [cardiovascular disease] or cancer."
